Computers: Tiny Electric Gossip Machines

Right now, you're probably reading this on a computer, phone, or tablet.

When you type a letter, say "A," your keyboard sends a tiny electrical signal.

Your computer then goes:

"Ah yes, that's an A. I've seen those before."

Inside your device are billions of microscopic switches called transistors. Think of them as extremely fast light switches flipping on and off billions of times every second.

Those switches create patterns.

Those patterns become letters.

Letters become words.

Words become your very important Google search:

"Can fish get thirsty?"

The internet then sends your question around the world at ridiculous speeds until another computer finds the answer and sends it back.

The entire internet is basically millions of computers politely shouting information at each other.

An airplane flies because of its wings.

As the plane moves forward, air flows over and under the wings.

The shape of the wing creates lower pressure above and higher pressure below.

Imagine screaming information across a room.

Now imagine doing it with invisible radio waves.

That's Wi-Fi.

Your router constantly throws radio signals around your house.

Your devices catch them.

The result is cat videos appearing instantly on demand.

A remarkable achievement for humanity.


How Does a Refrigerator Make Things Cold?

It doesn't.

It steals heat.

Your fridge takes heat from inside and dumps it outside.
