Humans are fascinating creatures.
We built pyramids.
We invented electricity.
We figured out how to fly through the sky in a giant metal tube while eating tiny bags of pretzels.
We landed on the Moon.
But somewhere in the middle of all that genius...
People were still dragging 25kg suitcases through airports like they were pulling a stubborn Labrador.
Let's rewind...
Someone invents the suitcase.
"Brilliant!"
Years later...
Someone invents the luggage trolley.
"Genius!"
Then someone invents those little carts you stack the suitcases on.
"Even better!"
And then... after decades of everyone breaking a sweat between Check-In and Gate 42...
One absolute legend in a meeting goes...
"Hear me out... what if... and stay with me here... we put the wheels... ON... the suitcase?"
...
Silence.
Someone drops their coffee.
A manager whispers...
"Promote this person immediately."
Honestly... that meeting deserves an Oscar.
Remember when owning an MP3 player made you the coolest person on the bus?
Thousands of songs in your pocket!
Then Apple casually wandered into the room and said...
"Nice music player... shame if someone put that inside a phone."
Camera?
Inside the phone.
Torch?
Inside the phone.
GPS?
Inside the phone.
Calculator?
Inside the phone.
Meanwhile, the MP3 player is now sitting in a drawer next to three Nokia chargers that fit absolutely nothing.
There was a time when people swore they'd never type on a touchscreen.
"I need real buttons!"
BlackBerry built an empire on tiny clicky keyboards.
Then everyone happily started typing on smooth glass...
...with thumbs the size of jacket potatoes.
Turns out we adapted surprisingly well.
We used to carry wallets stuffed with receipts from 2018.
Now someone buys a coffee by waving their watch at a machine.
Imagine explaining that to someone in 1995.
"So... your watch buys things?"
"Yes."
"Does it tell the time?"
"Sometimes."
Remember spending £3.99 for a polyphonic version of your favourite song?
Your phone would ring in Tesco and you'd proudly let the chorus play.
Now?
If someone's phone rings in public, everyone turns around like they've just witnessed a crime.
Most phones spend their lives on silent.
We've gone from...
"Listen to my ringtone!"
to...
"Please don't know I'm alive."
Once upon a time, owning 500 DVDs was a flex.
Now we have 50,000 films available instantly...
...and still spend 45 minutes scrolling before watching the same sitcom for the nineteenth time.
Technology solved everything...
...except making decisions.
The biggest breakthroughs aren't always huge scientific discoveries.
Sometimes they're just ridiculously obvious ideas that somehow took everyone ages to notice.
Like wheels on suitcases.
It's the business equivalent of someone saying...
"What if umbrellas... but for your shoes?"
Or...
"What if pizza... but folded?"
So the next time someone tells you,
"Everything's already been invented."
Smile.
Then remind them that humanity invented rockets...
before we thought to put wheels on a suitcase.
If that doesn't give you hope for your next idea...
I don't know what will.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to invent square doughnuts.
You're welcome.
