Way back when gladiators were still the influencers of the day, the Roman calendar started in March. No January, no February. Just straight into spring battles and toga parties.

Here’s how it looked:

• April = 2nd month

• May = 3rd month

• June = 4th month

• Quintilis (“fifth,” later renamed July for Julius Caesar)

• Sextilis (“sixth,” later renamed August for Augustus)

• September = 7th

• October = 8th ????

• November = 9th

• December = 10th

Yup, back then October really was the eighth month.

Fast forward to Julius Caesar’s big “calendar patch update” in 45 BCE (the Julian Calendar). He added January and February to the front of the year, making October the tenth month. But they never bothered renaming it.

That’s why today October is basically the “Final_v27_ACTUALfinal_THISONE.pdf” of months.
