How to win at interviews – Looking for work in the healthcare industry, visit www.jeesal.org/careers

Cover letters are key

If your submitting an application form or a CV for a job that you are desperate to get an interview for, then your cover letter really needs to be top notch! If your cover letter fails to grab the attention of the reader, then it’s going to get nowhere near the top of the interview pile. In fact, and we hate to break it to you, its more likely to end up in pieces in the shredding machine.
So, the key tips for a good cover letter are:-
  • Keep it to one page. You really don’t want to bore the reader, so no waffling!
  • Open your letter with a strong couple of sentences which grabs the reader’s attention.
  • Then, tell the reader why they should hire you; what makes you an ideal employee; what your key skills are, and why these skills are better than the other potential applicants.

Now for the interview

So your awesome cover letter helped get you an interview. Now its time to really sell yourself!

  1. Do your research! Find out as much as you can about the company beforehand. This will definitely help with your nerves and will help impress the interview panel.
  2. Do not, under any circumstances, be late! Leave plenty of time and if you’re driving to the interview, do a dummy run a day or two beforehand to make sure you know the way. If you are running behind schedule you’ll arrive flustered and this won’t be a good start!
  3. Don’t bad mouth your former employers or colleagues.
  4. Always be honest. Don’t lie about any gaps in employment, its better to say you spent the time studying or doing something to develop yourself.
  5. Make sure you dress professionally.
  6. Finally, always follow up with an email thanking for the opportunity of an interview.

Good Luck!
